Além desta peculiar preferência alimentar também possuem o hábito de defecar e urinar em suas próprias pernas com a finalidade de se refrescarem. Este estranho hábito é conhecido como urohidrose.
A sua má fama também é devida por ser um usurpador de ninhos alimentando-se dos ovos, inclusive ovos de tartarugas e as próprias tartaruguinhas recém nascidas, antes de conseguirem alcançar refúgio nas águas das praias onde nascem.
