Pica-pau (Colaptes campestris campestris) - Campo Flicker

Ao contrário do que algumas pessoas ainda pensam esta espécie de Pica-pau alimenta-se de insetos, principalmente formigas e cupins, e não de madeira. São terrícolas, capturando os insetos sobre a superfície do solo. Quando se sentem ameaçados procuram as copas das árvores, onde também podem se alimentar dos insetos que porventura se encontrem na superfície dos troncos.

São excelentes escaladores de árvores, troncos e barrancos, utilizando sua cauda como um terceiroponto de apôio.

Esta espécie controe seus ninhos em barrancos, preferindo cavar o lado que se inclina para o solo visando proteção da chuva e também a defesa contra a entrada de invasores. Geralmente fazem mais de uma cavidade, do tamanho de seu corpo a fim de dificultar a invasão por animais de maior porte. Existem relatos que também fazem seus ninho em montes de cupins (cupinzeiros) com a abertura de entrada voltada para o leste, provavelmente para captar o sol da manhã e evitar o sol da tarde, mantendo o interior do ninho sob temperaturas agradáveis.
Contrary to what some people still think this kind of woodpecker feeds on insects, especially ants and termites, not wood. They are terrestrial, capturing insects on the soil surface.
