Ave comum no Brasil, sempre presente onde existe água (rios, lagos e represas). Apesar de comum, são muito bonitas por seu porte elegante e por suas penas completamente brancas. No período reprodutivo passa a apresentar penas denominadas "egretas", que já foi muito utilizada em ornamentos de chapéus femininos. Característica que a tornou muito procurada por caçadores que vendiam estas penas para os fabricantes de chapéu.
